Have applied for almost all the credit cards available in SG, coz as a consumer, the saddest thing is when you're in a restaurant/boutique & you just are not entitled to a certain privilege or discount.
What I feel is some Banks' cards are simply such a pain to apply for! Not that I dun meet the income req, or have a bad credit rating man anyways! For the record, and for those fresh in the workforce looking to get a card soon, here are some of my personal/friends' views on Card application:
Citibank - Painless, plus point is the instant approval. They work fast in there!
UOB / DBS / ABN - Painless, quick, just need 1 valid income doc & you're gd to go without much hassle (most of the time)
SCB / OCBC - Troublesome, they keep sending letter after letter to ask for ONE MISSING THING at a time, and best is after sending all that they wanted already, upon me checking w Bank, they said, "oh we still keep auto-sending reminder letters coz we dunno you have sent out the docs. It goes to another dept la". $#1*#%&^@
AMEX - Moderately difficult to get. A lot of invitation-only, even the sales agent are not that interested to approach you unless you are Male, mature & welding lots of Money near their Roadshow, trust me. I had to walk up to them to take the form & nobody bothered about me.
HSBC - Real difficult to get approved. My friends, even my uncle, who are very qualified, have been rejected many times, and have to wait 3 months to "try again". Even.for.the.freaking.classic.card. Only good thing is you can check online for the application status e.g. pending/reject/approved.
Bank of China / Diners Club / Maybank - Normal approval times, but these cards really, you will realise you seldom use coz too little privileges/good reward programme out there for you to do so. Will just be another card in your wallet =)
i checked for u oredi $0.25 per auto top-up transaction
default top up value - $30.00
if each month u spend $600 on the ezlink top-ups, the rebate is 2%
if less than $600, the rebate is 1.7%
if each month u spend $600 on the ezlink top-ups, the rebate is 2%
if less than $600, the rebate is 1.7%
Thanks FireIce. Appreciate that.
Based on your figures...the savings ain't much. Say one top up 4 times a month - that makes $120 worth. 1.7% rebate is $2.04. Minus off $0.25 fee for auto top up, you are left with $1.04 savings.
Nothing to shout about at all.
Then again, I like the convenience of auto top up. And some savings, albeit very very little, is better than none.

Savings is definitely not much. After lugi for a while, i decide its not worth it. basis on the amount of rebates i'm suppose to get verses the $0.25 charges each time... They are just painting a nice nice picture of use the card and get 400 trips off... Definitly not worth and last negative point as i have mentioned before is the rebates only last a year and if your rebates is less than the minimum exchange amount of $10 ie $9.99 then just too bad, it gets eaten up and reset back to zero ...sucks...

Same sentiments. Thats why my SMRT card is still staring at me miserably at the corner of my drawer.
I am still back to using my old EZ-Link. LOL
I was using that Citibank SMRT during the early part of this year due to it double the chances for the SMRT Ride and win lucky draw. The moment the lucky draw ends (sadly i didnt win any thing), there goes the SMRT into the drawer same as you ;) keke ...
I'm practical, for contest sake i'll use but hor the moment the contest ends...byebye :P

the rest oso come with T&C.....
so ultimately u have to be a really big spender to get the best of the rewards
Help!! Just received my DBS card bill & I got charged for annual fee plus GST somemore. Ever since I got it one year ago, I seldom use it except for instalment where DBS offered 0% interest. I heard that to get a waiver of the annual fee, just call in the hotline to request by saying you wish to discontinue the card - problem is my 12-month instalment has 2 more months of instalment left. Even if I call hotline to threaten to cancel, I can't...right?
To think I only signed up at a whim coz the card looked pretty. I hate paying annual fees for nothing!!
How how? Anyone has similar experience? How to "cancel" a card (to get waiver from bank) when there are outstanding monthly instalments?
u can just pay off the 2 months instalments now and then cancel the card.... shd be possible....
they shd be happy tt u clear the debt fast.

this is a major problem encountered by alot of people in singapore. Some people sign up for financial products from banks or insurance companies for the free gifts(e.g. psp, vouchers, etc)
In the end, only the financial institutions gain the most profit.

Hi Goldribbons,
Dun worry, i got quite alot of experience in this field. Call them and request for a annual fee waiver. Normally they will give it to you. No worries with regards to your installment plan, since you are on their installment plan you can't threaten to cancel, it dun work. Try to talk to them nicely.
If they still do not waive, just let them know you have been a loyal customer believing that DBS cares for their customers and on that basis you decided to take up your credit card offer and even took up a installment plan on their card. You could have taken a installment plan on other banks credit cards. Normally this stage, they will waive it for you.
However if that fellow is still so stubborn which i highly doubt so, you could mention that ok, i thought DBS was a well respected banks putting customers' welfare high on their priority list. Apparently i was mistaken, i will pay up this annual fee and upon the completion of the two months installment, i will terminate all cards with dbs, close any savings or fixed deposits with the bank and move to another bank. I will also highlight this disappointment with my close relatives and friends that DBS is not actually a customer friendly bank. I highly doubt it would have to come to this point but as the calls are recorded, when the bank finds out they lose a customer and more potential customers over a simple thing such as annual fee, that person who answer your call is going to get it big time. Banks dun earn money by annual fees...its nothing to them.
Final situation, if that person do not give you a waiver at this point of time, he/she must have hated you alot. In that case, email to forums, write to the papers over banks not willing to even offer a annual fee waiver. Normally that will take a big hit to their reputation and waiver is definitely no problem... If this case happens, it must be quite amazing.
Cheers, hope the above steps helps :)

Thanks guys!
I used the advice of FireIce and inform the Banks to charge me for whatever outstanding balance monthly instalments left on the card. Wanted to call in as per Deathsender but getting thru the numerous steps & waiting for a CSO to answer the damn phone is such a waste of time...!
To qwerty123, haha I am NOT like that so bad, signing up cards haphazardly. Just that during that time, I needed my first DBS card (discounts everywhere) and of coz chose that card coz it was prettiest la.. (Woman's Card)
On another note, I have since NOT taken up any more instalments at ANY place, instead i opt to pay in full, or 50-50 (most places allow you to do that) for products/services I use. It's terrible to have the jaws of INSTALMENTS hugging you every month or when u want to cancel card.....
Thanks guys!

hmmm...to me, in my own personal views,
not all instalments are bad...especially if they are 0% instalment, then it is actually quite a good way to repay back.
Provided that you do your maths first and you are sure that you are able to part with that sum of money every month for the period of the instalment. Rather than being poor all of a sudden, you spread out the money into equal payments every month.
That's my own personal opinion.
Thanks guys!

Ta-Dahhhh!
DBS ppl replied my email & *still* asked me to call the hotline. Fine! Actually a bit pissed but called anyway. Have managed to reach to speak to a CSO after a long wait on-hold for "next available" one. I like these filipino CSOs, super polite u cannot bear to scream @ them. He actually put me on-hold (again) whilst he chk if the Bank can render me a waiver. And they did la!
"Congratulations Miss, we are pleased to inform you that the Bank has kindly agreed to give you a waiver on goodwill & to thank you for using this Card" - Like I won a BIG PRIZE like that...
Yeah I understand what everyone mentioned on 0% instalments, but y'know it's painful seeing all those for the next 12-months rather than paying one-shot then forget about it la =) Even I dun spend anything with a credit card, it surely has those monthly instalments haunting me month-by-month...

Oh dun you feel happy...u have just won a free waiver :P HAHAHAHA...
Generally they will give u the waiver, just need to waste abit of your phone airtime...other than that its alright... I even has Acer hotline put me on hold for 30plus minutes... they really dun know what to say...."amazing"...
About the 0% installment, its up to individual, installment plans are meant to give you more time to return the money you owed the bank over a period of time. Or you can take a bigger pain in the beginning lor... Up to individual preference.

yes, i understand your point because i still hav this instalment that i am still clearing every month...haha
reason why i took the instalment plan was because at that point of sales, i am unable to come up with such a sum of money...haha
Zero Installment means as long you pay up the fixed amount per month on time. Its interest free. you get more leeway in spreading your debt out each month. For example 3.6K one short seems quite steep but spread over a year or even 3 years, its rather affordable. Just remember to pay on time.
Cheers

i think we should call those bank hotlines using our office lines...so that we do not have to waste our airtime waiting for the CSO to speak to you...haha
talking about being put on hold.........
a fren lost his wallet on a cab and called the call centre and was put on hold for 48 minutes (he's got the timer thing on his hp) while they try to trace the cab, send out the msg...blah blah blah
bcos the priority is on the ppl calling cabs
and at nite, they do not have the "lost & found" personnel on duty (cos these ppl oni work office hours)
so they do not know the SOP of handling lost and found calls and have to ask here ask there, taiji here taiji there....
moral of the story: dun lose any damn thing in cabs outside office hours k?
ok, after 48 minutes, the cabbie responded and sent back his wallet
money gone but all other impt documents (like the cards and stuff) were intact

hmm...i guess maybe remembering the taxi number helps?
actually if you look at it, debit cards are sometimes better...at least you won't fall into the debt trap...disadvantage is probably not as much discounts and cannot pay by instalments...
Ah..but u see debit cards are limited by the amount of money you have in your bank account and if u want to buy something that cost maybe 2500 and you have 2500 exactly in your bank account how? ...kena rejected...then become so disappointed cannot buy that particular stuff.

yes that's the disadvantage, but if you look at it from another point of view, it actually helps to control your spending. Spend within your limits! haha
debit card is just a "glam" nets bcos u sign instead of press the PIN.
agree tt when signing a debit card, u tend to think twice bcos it will straight away deduct the money from ur account.... psychologically feels more sim tia... kekeke.

now UOB has this NOW card to replace the old debit cards...come with more functions like ezlink card function...but it doesn't really look that nice...

Very true...but it comes with additional perks like discounts etc lor...but hor that shiok signing feeling is only for a while.... after that its no big deal...I also use my Posb debit mastercard as a nets ...coz i still got my credit cards lor...
Well i would rather have Nets and Credit cards... Debit cards hor are like neither here nor there type of cards... rather useless...

haha

Agreed x 3!! It's the replacement card for UOB Visa electron (sorta de facto card for all students out there?) as it will be ceased in June'08. So suddenly when they sent it (yet another "pre-approved" card) thru the mail w/o warning & I opened it (bro's studying overseas) - the first thing I said....I think cannot be printed here la.
Super ugly, for a Bank which produced one of the prettiest cards (UOB Lady's card) so far, that card is UGLY. Solid red background with the word NOW printed over it. Must have been last-min work....quickly produce it one. Imagine when you pay over the counter, quite embarassing leh. I will never apply...

On another note btw - I just made my first HSBC card application! All those stories that "its hard to get approved", "you may get rejected as many as 4x" etc etc....really scared me man.
I applied for the HSBC Revolution (new!) card! Finally a new fresh-looking card from them - another reason y I din want to apply for their cards is that it's NOTHING special. Normal golds & plat ones, of which all the frens I know holding HSBC cards is the Gold ones. Decided to apply coz teaching a relative how to apply so decided to try it out myself too =)
Wish me luck everyone~

wah seh...when you do your shopping, did you try this out?
flip out all your cards and ask the cashier to choose one which she like? haha
Nay, u watch too much movies liao...
last time i thought got the cards rolling out of the wallet make u look cool...but hor practically its too troublesome and furthermore the amount of cards is too many to fit in my wallets even if i do bring them around, its in a 9 sleeves file... (think those kids bringing those those pokemon and yugiyoh cards folders X 3 times the thickness, thats why big its going to be).
Normally when i want to buy stuff, i look at what cards offers a bigger discounts or special deals then i go home and bring the card next day. Thats one way of preventing impulse buying, so when i go home, take a nap and when i wake up next time and feel i still want to buy the thing then i bring the card out. If i change my mind in between then the card stays put in my album.

citibank was ALMOST hassle-free... perhaps it's because done via telemarketing... so everything was already arranged nicely, just wait for me to say YES.
over the phone, she said it's a free upgrade from my current classic card to platinum and will waive the annual fee (that's why i said YES since the classic card is expiring and bcos im a cheapo tt do not like to pay annual fees)
but when the statement came, they charge me the annual fee
so i called and *ahem*, expressed my concerns.
and they apologized and say i do not have to pay the annual fee... they will adjust when the next bill comes.
so 2nd bill came and the annual fee is still there.
so i called again and *ahem*, expressed my concerns a bit louder.
again, apologies and promised to waive.
3rd bill came and yes, the annual fee is still there
i practically yelled and told them to f**king cancel the card if they can't even keep the promise and even dragged for 3 months... and each time they say the previous CSO that handled my call was not around/left the company/disappeared from surface of the earth/watever......i can't get a proper audit trail at all...
so....... i got more apologies and after 3 times, they finally waived the annual fee.......

Dear Fireice, i dun really have the same problem as you do as everything i call for a annual fee waiver, i do take down the name of person i'm speaking with and the time and date of the call. Perhaps that works?

Hi, well since i have cards from every bank, heres some my personal experience of each of the banks:
ABN
Normal as stated by Goldribbons of about 2 weeks. Applying thru booth promoters cut the time to about 1 - 1.5 weeks. Nothing fantastic with their cards or benefits. They do waive the fee when u use the their card to book a taxi. They also provide a nice namecard casing when you apply for supplementary card.
AMEX
Dear Goldribbons, they have a strict rules to abide from which is not to offer the application to customers out of their booth area. If you do take a look or do a test, if you walk into their booth, they will approach you to offer you their cards. 2nd, they do not really have a high quota for their credit cards, thats why they are not aggressive in promoting their products. Normally they just stand there and act pretty or handsome --> Aka *Vase* or *Hua Ping*. Furthermore they are supposed to portray a image of being exclusive. Most of the time, they do invitation via snail mail or via telemarketing.
They have quite attractive offers / vouchers upon approval. Like complimentary membership to a certain exclusive club. One important thing to note for people intending to apply for their cards, they never waive annual fee for free, its a confirmed thing. I always had to cancel and reapply again.
Bank of China
Approval process takes about two weeks which is norm, quite unique card designs and comes with a complimentary Great wall of china card applicable for use in Hong kong and China only. Rewards programs is almost impossible to hit as their rewards redemptions require super high amount of points to redeem.
Citibank
Initial process is norm with about about 2 weeks. if you apply via those promoters at those booths, it will take about 1 week. Subsequent applying for other cards do not require any documents, just a photocopy of your existing card or some cases depending on the promoter, no requirement for anything at all. Quite alot of benefits especially SMRT if you travel often, you can chalk up points to offset your travel expenses.
Diners Club
Normal application takes about 2 weeks. Applying via those promoters at those booths, it will reduce the time taken to about 1 week. Subsequent applying for other cards do not require any documents, just a photocopy of your existing card or some cases depending on the promoter, no requirement for anything at all. They provide a free gift upon approval subjected to a charge to the card within 30 days of approval (However the trick is to apply via a promoter and get the promoter to get the gift for you, therefore you wont even need to charge anything to your card.)
Not much benefits, however they do have the longest period of installment plans among all the banks or financial institutions.. so you want to buy furniture, wedding dinner, photo package etc and want to stretch over a longer period of time via installment plan, Diners club card is the card to choose. *Its on a interest free installment plan --> interest free only if you pay on time or before the due date.
DBS
First Card application with them takes about 2 weeks with applying thru those booth promoters cut the time down into half. Same as citibank, applying subsequent cards with them only either requires a photocopy of your existing card, no requirement for any further income documents. Their POSB everyday platinum card offers quite a good rebate if you shop at carrefour. And their Altitude card offers the best expenditure to mileage convertion rate at $0.83 to 1 Mile.
HSBC
No problems with me getting the classic or gold cards, approval takes about two weeks. And when you apply, they give you both the visa and mastercard if you apply for either the classic or gold. However their platinum visa and premier master is rather hard and difficult to get. They do have alot of 1 for 1 dining offers. Service wise, i find them to be ok, however their rewards program is rather difficult to redeem with high redemption points requirement.
Maybank
Application process for the cards takes about two weeks, with application done thru the promoters to be slightly faster maybe about 1.5weeks bah...around there. They have glow in the dark credit cards which is rather unique in the market. Nothing fantastic about them. However you do watch concerts or shows often like shows booked thru sistic. Maybank generally is the only bank that offers discounts for those concerts or shows and the discounts is quite alot like maybe 25% off. For the most expensive seats, it can mean a great deal of savings. For their platinum card, they do offer Complimentary green fees at 15 exclusive golf clubs in Asia Pacific, and discounted green fees to 200 golf clubs worldwide and discounted golf travel packages to Asia, Europe and U.S.A. On top of that you can enjoy free access to Palm Resort Golf & Country Club and Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort which entitles you to free golf games at the clubs.
OCBC
Normal application takes about 2 weeks, applying thru promoters takes about 1 week. Their Titanium offers alot of offers with mainly travel and golf benefits. Their rewards programs requirements are very high and it requires a great deals of points just to redeem like a single movie tickets, not worth it. Their departments dun talk to each other, i tried updating my particulars and removing my old outdated mobile no. After multiply emails, calls and letters over two year. It always comes back as being the same. I sort of given up and leave it just as it is.
SCB
Application takes about two weeks, with application done with the help of the promoters tends to improve the timing to less than two weeks. As what goldribbons mention, their departments dun talk to each other and they keep sending letter to remind you to send in the documents sometimes to the point of you getting the card and they keep reminding you. Abit bo liao though plus waste of paper.
UOB
Fast and quick, very little hassle generally same as Citibank and DBS. First application of card requires about two weeks and applying thru promoters takes about 1 week. Subsequent cards application is approved quickly and cards received in about 1 week or less. Reasonable rewards programs with reachable items for redemption. Previous 2007 Visa signature rewards is fantastic with great travel deals. 2008 rewards programs is however in my P.O.V ok nia.
Ok Guys / Gals, thats my point of view... ;)
Kindly note that i do not work in banks or financial institutions and all my comments are based on my own personal opinion as a customer of those banks or institution stated above.

Sometimes, too many cards gets one confused as to which is the best card to use.
Ie. in current GSS, almost every bank have a special promo for their card.
For Citibank SMRT, after a friend's calculation, she saved a miserable $3.50 for her 1 yr usage.
In summary, which card do u all usually use?
Points reedemption have been increasing. Used to be using UOB for most off my transactions but their points reedemption have been increasing every year, now I am reduced to using DBS.
POSB is good for Watson purchases.
OCBC is good to offset your movie tics.
UOB Smarts is good for Guardian.
I find it troublesome to pay Citibank & OCBC bills coz prefer to do everything online but I don't own the Citibank account, only their cards.
i think the citibank smrt card is a major flop
i think DBS live fresh card is not bad
15% off at timbre on Sat
$2 off movie tix on friday at the cathay
for food, it's gotta be UOB
every month there are 1-for-1, 3+1 dining offers
any UOB card will do
some of the offers also valid for their debit cardholders
citibank tangs card, if u are a frequent tangs shopper
they have plenty of events and members deals throughout the year
like members-only sale, 12% rebates

Hmm...I do use Citibank SMRT card. One of their main convenience of the card is the auto top up.
Savings-wise, I don't think it is significant. Then again, I haven't done my sums yet.
For ladies, UOB ladies card looks a very popular choice.

Honestly my personal opinion is that the SMRT citibank fail in its cause in getting recognition coz the transaction fee each time it charge is not worth it. You need to clock up to $10 Citi dollars in order to redeem a $10 voucher and its a yearly thing. So if you managed to clock up to $9.95 in a year and its end of one year...Just too bad... your $9.95 goes down the drain... it happens to me last year $5 gone down the drain.
For Ladies, theres the DBS Woman card and UOB ladies card... in this case UOB Ladies card stand a better advantage in the deals it promotes... it has more goodies for ladies as compared to DBS woman card.
Thats from what i observe.

They do? I don't think so. They charge the top up to your card. And you still pay off the charges at the end of the month like any cc card charges.
But I may be wrong about this. Have to check it out...
